10,000 Signs

by: legacyofmarshall

Sun Jun 07, 2009 at 13:36:01 PM EDT

Cross-posted at Daily Kos

Not one week ago, yard signs advertising candidates for this Tuesday's Democratic Primary for Governor were few and far between, even in highly-political Northern Virginia, and the name "Creigh Deeds" was nowhere to be found.

That all changed on Wednesday, 3 June, when a whopping 10,000 Deeds yard signs arrived at the Deeds campaign office in Fairfax.  By Thursday, fewer than half were put together and only a few hundred were placed.  However, volunteers soon got to work making a Deeds presence throughout the region.

It's true, yard signs don't vote, but then again, in a Virginia primary, very few voters do either.  The Deeds campaign has opted not to run a traditional GOTV campaign in Northern Virginia, given that a high turnout in the region might help Brian Moran or Terry McAuliffe.  Rather, they have waged a campaign of name recognition and persuasion, with an unrivaled mail barrage on Dem. primary voters, and a series of TV ads meant to compete with Terry McAuliffe's far-wealthier campaign.

The excess of Deeds signs even in places like Arlington and Fairfax counties show that there are plenty of Creigh volunteers in the area, and they are motivated.  How else do you put up 10,000 signs in 6 days?

Here are a few choice examples that this Deeds supporter has found:

Amongst the towers and traffic of Seven Corners in Falls Church

A supporter and Senator Deeds at Clarendon Metro

At the green behind Clarendon Metro in Arlington

Competing with Terry in McLean

My personal favorite: outside of Terry McAuliffe's neighborhood in McLean

If anyone else has photos from the upcoming Virginia primary - put them up!  Unfortunately I am rather isolated these days in Northern Virginia, but hopefully things are heating up across the Old Dominion.

Finally - if you want to volunteer for the Deeds campaign in the home stretch -
contact the field office closest to you!

That explains it! (0.00 / 0)
The explosion of Deeds signs in the past week is obvious in Fairfax.  Looks like they're sprouting up everywhere I've been this weekend.  And they far outnumber anything I've seen from the other two in Fairfax.

Although I will say from my lesser travels in Arlington that there is a much closer balance between all three in the sign war.

On the subject of Deeds' signs, I'm wondering if they're using the same sign in "Real Virginia" (to quote our Republican friends).   These Fairfax signs tout the WaPo endorsement, which I'm not sure means as much to non-NOVA residents.

Presence (0.00 / 0)
I have been told I don't know how many times about our "lack of presence" in Northern Virginia...I think this helps a lot because even though signs don't vote I think that people like to see the name of the candidate who they think they are supporting around.

On Wednesday I'll discuss how we did everything we did!  I'm happy so many people are taking notice :)

"Real Virginia" (0.00 / 0)
reporting (Lexington and Rockbridge County): there are no signs at all here, not from any of the candidates; I guess we're considered too red to bother with.

In recent days, the only signs of upcoming primaries which I have seen/heard are: a robocall from McAuliffe, two robocalls (one today) from Moran, one robocall, by a math teacher, on behalf of Deeds (today), a couple of plain (letter type) mailers from Deeds and that "newspaper" one from Signer.

And, Eric, you do us an injustice; even in "Real America", we can and do, read newspapers. Not "all of them", the way Alaska Barbie does but, still... Although many people read the Roanoke Times, about as many got used to reading WashPo when it was still delivered (it no longer is, except on Sundays) and still read it -- on line. In my household, we read WashPo on line and subscribe to NYTimes at W&L (weekdays only).

We aren't all hicks; we just pretend. Protective coloration, y'know, 'specially durin' the huntin' season :)

Ooops - I didn't mean it in that way (0.00 / 0)
I suppose my phrasing could be interpreted as "real Virginia doesn't read newspapers" - which is not how I meant it.  While the WaPo is a major national newspaper I tend to think of it more in terms of the specific region it serves - the greater D.C. area.

I'm simply wondering if those outside the greater D.C area would be as swayed by the endorsement of a non-local paper and if the Deeds campaign looked at it that way as well.

NOTE - I have deleted a comment (0.00 / 0)
which was an unsubstantiated statement about an unreleased poll.  If you cannot link to something confirming the information, it does not belong on this website.

Thank you.

This is my world and welcome to it

Today: McLean to Tysons (0.00 / 0)
There are a slew of Deeds signs along 123 from McLean to Tysons, despite a monster McAuliffe sign & a bunch of little ones thereabouts.  Moran, not so much.

Looks as though the Deeds signs just came up fresh after the rain!

I hope I see some Deeds signs in Hampton Roads tomorrow (0.00 / 0)
haven't been out today, but lately all I've seen are McAuliffe signs. There are two lonely Moran signs on the corner of Greenbrier and Volvo in Chesapeake (and, oddly enough, a Bowerbank sign next to them). But I haven't seen a single Deeds sign yet.

Creigh's two week strategy has been (0.00 / 0)
class act!

I gotta say - Joe Abbey doing a good job!

In downtown Harrisonburg, didn't see a single sign for anyone (0.00 / 0)
in the gubernatorial race.

Did talk to two young Obama supporters who work in the Barnes & Nobles, where I bought Renegade, prompting a brief and pleasant political discussion.

Neither of them even knew there's a high-profile and hotly contested Democratic gubernatorial race being decided on Tuesday.

That's interesting (0.00 / 0)
I got a call from a buddy down in Virginia Beach and I told him I have been extremely busy with the campaign and he also was unaware of the primary coming up.  Interesting!

50-100 signs near one intersection in Alexandria, VA (0.00 / 0)
Unusual but effective.  At a busy intersection (Seminary Road and Beauregard), there are plenty of the "Washington Post endorses" Deeds signs lining the roads, with perfect spacing that catches the eye.  This weekend is the first time I have seen a Deeds sign in Moran's home district.
